Collection: Chkhaveri Wines

Chkhaveri (pronounced: tchuk-veri) is a white flesh, pink skin grape, native to the western Georgia region of Guria.  It is also grown in Imereti and Achara, but Guria is its home.  Guria, known through ancient times for its tea on the silk road, has a semi-tropical, wet climate that the Chkhaveri varietal thrives in.  It requires careful pruning and historically was trained to grow up trees to allow for the vines to breath.  The grape is relatively rare but has a growing following around the world for its pink color, tropical fruit taste, and balance of alcohol (low) and acidity.  It can be made in a variety of styles including red/rose/white, and dry/semi-sweet, still and sparkling.  The range of aromas and flavors varies with the styles; but common characteristics are fresh red berries, cherries, baking spices, strawberry, cola, anise and smoke.  Quite complex and spectacular.
