The word mtsvane means green. For Kateryna Chiganova, the founder of Mtsvane Estate, green is the beginning of everything. In a recent Elle article Kateryna aptly sums up her beginning, “Do you think it is easy to find a Georgian who believes that a Ukrainian woman can come to Georgia and create a wine that will conquer not only the most sophisticated local experts, but the whole world?” Indeed that was exactly what she did when she recent established the Mtsvane Estate.
Mtsvane Estate crafts sparkling wines or Pét-Nats as they are called in Georgia. The name Pétillant Naturel, shortened to Pét-Nat, comes from the French words "petillant" and "naturel" and translates to "sparkling natural". This is a natural sparkling wine with a single fermentation in the bottle. Unlike classic sparkling wines, no sugar or other ingredients are added to it.
In 2021, Mtsvane Estate Winery received the highest award for "Best Small Winery" according to the Welcome To Georgia Tourism Awards. The following year, Pét-Nat Mtsvane won the Sommelier's Choice Award at Wine Expo Georgia. And in 2023, Kateryna received the "Oscar of Winemakers", a gold medal at the London Newspaper Awards 2023 competition.
Winemaker
Levan Chichinadze
Levan Chichinadze is Georgian born who was raised and educated in Ukraine.
He completed his master's degree at the Faculty of Wine Preparation Technology with a postgraduate course in sparkling wine production technology. He worked in Ukraine, Europe, Australia and returned to Georgia to his mother.
On his return to Georgia, he founded Tiko Estate, in the Kakheti Region, with his brother Georgi.
Kataryna and Levan met through their work and realized that a common project was what they needed. In 2019 they bottled the first of their Pét-Nats. Everything they do is crafted and “handmade”. It is a family affair. Today Mtsvane Estate produces 20,000 bottles a year.
Vineyards & Varietals
Currently, the Mtsvane brand has four different sparkling wines. The grapes are sourced from different regions and, accordingly, from different grape varieties. All of them differ in mood, taste and texture. The varietals used for the four products are: Tsolikaura and Tsitska from the Imeriti region, Chinuri and Goruli Mtsvane from the Shida Kartli region, Saperavi from the villages of Artana and Napareuli in the Kakheti region and Mtsvane and Rkatsiteli from the villages of Didi Chailuri and Manavi in the Kakheti Region.
Sustainability
Mtsvane wines are natural sparkling wine with a single fermentation in the bottle. Unlike classic sparkling wines, no sugar or other ingredients are added to it. The grapes used for Mtsvane wines are grown and harvested in line with the sustainable and natural traditions of Georgian winemaking.
